intended reception of the message, the fragments of concrete experience that interrupt
hegemony. it is the mapping of emotional and political territories. ifitisn’t is
cartographer and rhetoricican.

Maria Kalnars is a musician and visual artist working mainly in an electro-acoustic duo ifitisn’t with Robinson and in both improvised music, jazz and free jazz. She is the “acoustic” part of this outfit and uses voice, piano, keyboard, melodion, recorder, viola, percussives and found objects to make sounds to move the listener into a relaxed, enticing, intriguing and somewhat exciting space.
Maria has responded to various environments and expressed this vocally, recorded and worked with the material to develop it live. She has developed her work across many genres, played in jazz groups, with various ensembles, bands and orchestras for musicals, a jazz duo and gigged in all kinds of settings. Maria has an MA in music from City University, London [implementation of Martha Hyde’s analysis of Schoenberg’s 12-tone method, research into women in the history of jazz].
ifitisn’t has performed at art galleries in joint events with artists. ifitisn’t is available for gigs in London / UK and beyond; they can be contacted for submissions of work for broadcast, performance or installation via the label’s contact page – I will pass on any requests to Robinson & Maria.
